LAWYERS representing Samson Siasia have told MTNFootball.com exclusively that they are confident a deal for the former Nigeria international to take over the Super Eagles would be reached on Tuesday.
Siasia's lead lawyer, Ijere Austin told MTNFootball.com that he is hopeful a deal would be struck on Tuesday when they meet again with top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
"Samson is desperate to satisfy the yearnings of Nigerians who love him so much and have been clamouring for him to get the job. So, he is ready to finalise discussions with the leadership of the NFF on Tuesday," Austin disclosed.
"We have discussed and he has agreed to lower his demands for a monthly salary of five million naira (about $35,000) and a signing-on fee of fifty million naira. This we hope to convince the NFF when we meet again on Tuesday. Although I won't be able to give you details now until we finish our discussions.

Australia made one of the biggest jumps, climbing three spots into a tie with Italy for 11th while Canada dropped two spots to 13th.
However, Nigeria maintained its position as number one in Africa, followed by Ghana, South Africa, Algeria and Equitorial Guinea, who occupied the 43rd, 57th, 66th and 70th position respectively on the rankings.

Newcastle offers N375m for Anichebe
IT is believed Newcastle coach, Hughton, is looking for a striker to add to his squad before the transfer window closes and feels that Nigeria international, Victor Anichebe could be the ideal player to score the goals and keep Newcastle in the Premier League.
Anichebe only has twelve months left on his current contract at Goodison Park and the Merseyside club could listen to offers of around £1.5 million which is inside Hughton’s current budget.
The striker has been at Everton for seven years but has seen Louis Saha and new signing, Jermaine Beckford pull ahead of him in the pecking order and is believed to want first team football.

Rabiu Ibrahim's Dutch move fails
NIGERIA youth international, Rabiu Ibrahim will not be joining Dutch club VVV Venlo after negotiations broke down over the player's personal terms.
MTNFootball.com has scooped that VVV could not match Ibrahim's financial expectations and so the deal was called off.
Before then, the highly gifted Ibrahim had impressed in a training match with the modest Dutch club, who already have three other Nigerians on their books – Ahmed Musa, Alex Nkume and Michael Uchebo.

TomTom hails Falconets, rewards team with $8,750
THE official candy of Nigeria’s national teams, TomTom, has applauded the Falconets for reaching the semi-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.
TomTom, which rewarded the Super Eagles and the Golden Eaglets for their shots on target at the Nigeria 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola and the World Cup in South Africa, is also rewarding the Falconets with $250 for every shot the girls have got on target in Germany.
The Falconets made history on Sunday by defeating defending champions, USA 4-2 in a gripping quarter-final clash in Augsburg that ended in a penalty shootout after full and extra-time could not separate the sides.
The win took the Nigerian girls to their first ever semi-final in the competition after they crashed out in the quarter-finals in each of the previous three editions.
In the course of their impressive run to the last four, the Falconets have racked up 35 shots on target (nine in their first group match against England, eight in the 2-1 victory over Japan, five in the 1-1 draw with Mexico, and 13 in the epic win over USA), bringing their total earnings so far to $8,750.
The Commercial Director, Cadbury Nigeria Plc, makers of TomTom, Mr. Idorenyen Enang, says the Falconets have brought smiles back to the faces of Nigerians.
“The Falconets have really made us all proud again; they have brought back relief, soothing relief like TomTom,” he said moments after the victory over USA.
“The players have shown us that there is a very bright future for Nigerian football and that we overcome any setbacks if we are determined to reach the top.
“They have proven that they are worthy of commendation and reward. It is no mean feat defeating the defending champion of the World Cup, but these young women have pulled it off. We are proud of them.”

NFF move elections to December
Elections into the board of the Nigeria Football Federation have been moved to December by the new leadership of the body.
The elections were originally scheduled to hold at the end of August, but a top member of the NFF informed KickOffNigeria.com that following the meeting in Abuja on Saturday night which saw the impeachment of President Sani Lulu and two of his principal officers, the new board had resolved to move the elections to give all parties a fair shake at the process.
"We resolved to move the elections to December to allow everyone with legitimate grievances to come forward and give us enough time to address those grievances."
Lulu's impeachment still needs to be ratified by the NFF Congress, and KickOffNigeria.com was also informed that that Congress would be convened within a month.
"We intend to call a congress between two weeks to one month from now to brief them on the decisions taken so far by the executive committee and seek ratification."
There is however, a twist in the tail, as some delegates who will make up the Congress informed KickOffNigeria.com that while they will ratify the decision of the Exco to impeach the leadership, they would also be moving to impeach the current leadership as "they were also part of the Lulu administration".

Nigeria reverse withdrawal
The Nigerian government has reversed its decision to withdraw the Super Eagles from international competition until 2012, according to AFP.
A spokesman for President Goodluck Jonathan announced the shock departure on Friday after Nigeria's poor performance at World Cup 2010 when they finished bottom of Group B with just one point. The absence would have seen the nation miss qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
The comment provoked a strong reaction from FIFA as they threatened to withdraw financial help, stop Nigerian referees from officiating in international matches and its clubs from partaking in African club competitions.
A letter had been sent to the Super Eagles' hierarchy with a deadline of 6pm today which had laid out the consequences. FIFA strongly resists any political interference in the running of national sides and uses a host of sanctions to forbid the action.
The move follows a hectic weekend for the Nigerian authorities after three members of the Nigeria Football Federation - FA president Sani Lulu, first vice-president Amanze Uchegbulam and Taiwo Ogunjobi, Technical Committee chairman of the NFF - were impeached after financial improprieties.

No Super Eagles for two years
The Nigerian national team has been withdrawn from all football for the next two years by the country’s president, Goodluck Jonathan.
This follows the Super Eagles’ first round elimination at the 2010 World Cup, where they failed to win a single match and managed just a solitary draw against Korea Republic.
Jonathan’s decision is based on the finding of a presidential taskforce set up to investigate the failures of the team.
The taskforce’s chairman, Rotimi Amechi, confirmed the move – which is yet to be officially conveyed to Fifa – saying it was to ensure “the embarrassing outcome of the World Cup in South Africa won’t repeat itself”.
“We had all sorts of maladministration. We found out that the problem with Nigerian football is structural. The nation has been punished enough. People have had heart attacks because of Nigerian football.”
Just where that leaves Lars Lagerback, the Swedish coach who was recently offered a new four-year deal, remains to be seen.

Yobo: We ’ll die for Nigeria against Korea
Written by Funmi Erinle Tuesday, 22 June 2010
NIGERIA'S deputy skipper, Joseph Yobo, has promised that he and his teammates would lay down their lives on the Moses Mabhida Stadium pitch in Durban, today against South Korea in a crunch Group B match.
The Super Eagles are aiming to defy the record books and qualify for the knockout stage after losing to Argentina and Greece.
No team in the World Cup history have ever lost more than one group stage game and gone ahead to reach the next round, yet Yobo said the Eagles could earn a place in the history books.
"On Tuesday, everyone is ready to fight and die for the colours of the country," said the Everton defender.
"We now have a possible mission towards the next round.
"The odds are certainly not against us because this team can fight and die on the pitch against the Koreans.
“Even with our left-backs (Taye Taiwo and Elderson Echiejile) battling with injury and Kaita ruled out, this has not dampened our confidence going into the final group game.
“It's a final chance against South Korea, we are even lucky that we have a game to put it right.”

I won't lose sleep over Korea -Lagerback
Written by Funmi Erinle Tuesday, 22 June 2010
MANAGER of the Super Eagles, Lars Largerback has said there is not much to worry about in today's last group match against Korea, in spite of the fact that anything short of victory will see Nigeria out of the World Cup.
The Swede tactician stated that his wards are battle ready for the challenges ahead, as no player wants to end the World Cup campaign in the first round.
Lagerback said that the team is well focused as anything can happen in football.
"The boys are in high spirits at the moment and would put in their best to win the match," said the former coach of Sweden.
Meanwhile, captain, Nwankwo Kanu is optimistic of leading the team to victory today against Korea, which would be his first appearance in the ongoing South Africa 2010.
"I'm confident of playing, I have enough experience to lead the boys to victory. My experience is needed in this kind of competition and I'm suprised that I have not been featured since," Kanu who featured at France '98 and 2002 World Cup finals told Tribunesports.
Portuguese referee, Olegario Benquerenca, has been appointed to officiate the match.

Left back crisis for Nigeria
Nigeria are facing a defensive crisis ahead of next Tuesday's final group game against South Korea in Durban, with both left backs nursing various degrees of injury.
First choice left back Taye Taiwo limped off with a groin injury after 55 minutes. His replacement Elderson Echiejile lasted only 22 minutes before he also had to hobble off with an injury.
On Friday, Echiejile worked out with team physiotherapist Dayo Ogunkunle away from the rest of the squad while Taiwo did not train at all.
NFF Executive Committee member Taiwo Ogunjobi told KickOffNigeria.com that the Olympic Marseille fullback will have a scan on Saturday.
"Taiwo has been scheduled for a scan on Saturday," Ogunjobi said. "It is only after that happens that we can say exactly what will happen."
Lagerback's options are limited in the absence of both left backs. Sani Kaita, who was deployed there against Argentina is suspended after his expulsion against Greece.
Centreback Rabiu Afolabi, who was thrown in there after Echiejile limped off did not exactly inspire confidence, leaving Lars Lagerback with the option of playing rightback Chidi Odiah at the opposite end.
Odiah started out as a left midfielder and is as comfortable with his right foot as he is with his left. In which case, Afolabi or Dele Adeleye could slot into right back.

Eagles promise to win for Kaita
Sani Kaita has received the backing of his team mates, who have promised to beat South Korea for him, to ensure that he gets a chance to redeem himself at this World Cup.
Kaita is suffering a storm of harsh media backlash following his expulsion against Greece on Thursday.
That sending off had fatal consequences for the Super Eagles, as they not only surrendered their one goal lead, but also conceded a second that handed victory to the Greeks.
The team held a meeting at lunchtime on Friday, where Kaita apologised to the rest of the squad for letting them down and asked for forgiveness.
He was given hugs by everyone as the team told him to look past it, and promised him that they would win for him.
Captain Joseph Yobo said: "He is a young footballer who will learn from mistakes like this.
"He's been a solid performer for this team in recent years. It was a mistake, an expensive one but we only have to fight now for what is left to salvage here."
And goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, who once again emerged as the man of the match, said: "Kaita is still a reliable player and should not be left to suffer from this.
"Stuff like that happen sometimes. If you saw him in training and watched him in the World Cup you would see why I still think he should be forgiven."
Nigeria's Kalu Uche, who got his country in front also said: "We all felt let down on the pitch but once we walked off it, he was in our thoughts.
"No-one is blaming him for anything. He has been a magnificent player for his country and his die-hard performances have earned us success in the past, he will return a better man."

Enyeama blames Jabulani, dismisses award
Vincent Enyeama says his second Man of the Match award meant nothing and blamed the Jabulani ball after the Super Eagles were beaten 2-1 by Greece on Thursday.
The result leaves the Super Eagles' World Cup hopes hanging in the balance.
"What do I gain from winning the Man of the Match award when my team loses? Nothing. So I feel disappointed.
"I think the decision was unfair. The two players hit each other. It should have been a yellow to the two of them.
"The Greek player should have been sent off for diving."
Enyeama spilled Karagounis' shot, allowing Tosoridis to score, and blamed the ball.
"It was the ball, not me. It moved at the last minute, but it is the the ball we have been given and we have to play with it."
Nigeria's next game is against South Korea and the goalkeeper says it is a game they will now have to win.
"We have to depend on Argentina to beat Greece, and then we will have to do our job against Korea.
"Impossible is nothing."

Tearful Kaita apologises
Sani Kaita was left in tears after picking up the decisive red card that ultimately cost Nigeria their must-win game against Greece.
The disconsolate midfielder left the field in tears, and looked so woebegone he had to be escorted around by Obinna Nsofor as he came through to meet the media.
"I made a mistake, he hit me with the ball and I went hard on him. I made a mistake and I want to say sorry to my players and to all Nigerians," Kaita said.
Vasileios Torosidis, who was involved in the scuffle with Kaita, appeared to make a meal of the challenge, and at the end, could not decide if he had been hit on the face or the leg.
"I think it was my face and my leg," he said with a sheepish smile.

Eagles out of W/Cup - Yobo
Written by Erinle Funmi Friday, 18 June 2010
SUPER Eagles assistant captain, Joseph Yobo, has said that Nigeria may have reached the end of the road in the ongoing World Cup in South Africa, after a 1-2 loss to Greece on Thursday in a Group B match in Bloemfontein.
Yobo pointed out that it will be highly difficult for Nigeria to advance to the second round of the tournament saying the team did not put the right attitude in the match against the Greeks.
According to the Everton defender, losing two matches in a row has placed Nigeria on a tight rope with the hope of qualifying very slim.
"Practically, we are out of the tournament because even if we win the last match, it's going to be difficult for us to qualify. The game against Korea will be highly difficult. It will not be easy against the Koreans," Yobo said.
He pointed out that Nigeria showed a lot of inexperience against the Greeks and paid dearly for it.
Yobo blamed Sani Kaita's sending off as the turning point adding that it affected the players resulting in the loss.
"We should have shown a lot of character in the match and some of our players are inexperienced as well. We were in control of the game before the red card, we should have done a bit much better," Yobo submitted.
Meanwhile, Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama won the Man of The Match award for the second time running.

Osaze, kalu in, as Nigeria ring changes
Osaze Odemwingie and Kalu Uche have been restored to Nigeria's starting line up ahead of Obinna Nsofor and Chinedu OPbasi as Lars Lagerback rings the changes in his Nigeria team to face Greece.
Odemwningie, a surprise exclusion from the starting line-up in the opening game against Argentina, brought a cutting edge to Nigeria's forward play when he came on as a second half substitute.
Kalu, who also came on as a second half substitute for Taye Taiwo, put himself about and only just missed a chance to draw the Super Eagles level.
Taiwo, who was taken off after suffering a minor knock, was back to full fitness and keeps his place in the starting line up.

Lagerback hints at changes
Lars Lagerback has suggested that there may be changes in the Nigeria team from the one that faced Argentina in the opening game.
Nigeria face Greece next after their opening day loss to Argentina, and Largeback says that the door is open to every player, with one training session to go.
"We have still one training session to go. I don’t shut the door on any player, so it could still be possible," Lagerback said after Nigeria's training session on Tuesday.
The Super Eagles need a win against the Greeks to keep their World Cup campaign alive and the Swede says he expects a different approach from the Argentina game.
"It's two different teams so you can play a little different when you come to the Greek team. The Argentina game was a good team performance and there were a lot of positive things.
"Of course it is never good to lose, but you also have to see what the players did. We are starting again, and concentrating on the Greece match because they play in a different way and different style.
Lagerback said the team had reacted positively to defeat and refused to let their heads drop.
"I must say the players have been very professional, very good attitude. It’s very easy being coach of the Super Eagles despite the fact we lost the first game.
"What we just need to do is stay focused and keep the spirit going."
The Nigerians fly out of Richards Bay on Wednesday for Bloemfontein.

Fifa slams ref over Argentine goal
The referee in the Argentina versus Super Eagles match on Saturday has been severely criticized by Fifa’s referee’s committee for allowing the South Americans’ goal.
The Fifa referee's committee criticised Wolfgang Stark’s decision not to give a foul for Walter Samuel’s obstruction in the build-up to the goal.
Argentina missed several gilt-edged chances on their way to a 1-0 victory on Saturday; however, according to Fifa the one attack that did finish with the net bulging should have been disallowed by referee Wolfgang Stark.
Ole reports that a Fifa post-match analysis ruled that there was a foul in the build-up to Gabriel Heinze’s stunning header, and that Stark should never have allowed the goal.
The Fifa referees’ committee released their findings on Tuesday, as a guide for future judgments in this year’s tournament. And among other rulings, they made it clear to referees that they must watch for infractions at corners and free-kicks - specifically attacking players blocking markers, as happened on Saturday.
As Juan Sebastian Veron’s cross floated over Walter, Samuel enveloped Chinedu Obasi and stopped him from moving, thereby giving Heinze all the space he needed to propel the ball home.
Stark should have therefore penalised Samuel for obstruction and awarded a free-kick to the Super Eagles - a judgment that could have changed the course of the whole game for Argentina.
Although the ruling comes too late for Nigeria, it has interesting implications for the rest of the tournament; a sign that Fifa will not tolerate the pushing, shoving and holding commonplace on both sides at dead-ball situations, and that in future such offences will be punished with either disallowed goals or penalties in the case of the defence committing an infraction.

No injury worries for Taiwo
Nigeria assistant coach Roland Andersson says left back Taye Taiwo sustained no serious injury despite being taken off with 15 minutes of play left.
Taiwo stayed down after his venomous effort just skimmed past Romero's goal and was replaced by Kalu Uche, with Taye Taiwo going to cover at left back, but Andersson told KickOffNigeria.com that the defender was fine.
"He is okay. Nothing serious and he will be ready for the next game," Andersson said.

Lagerback explains Maradona snub
Nigeria head coach Lars Lagerback has explained why he didn't shake the hand of his counterpart, Argentina's Diego Maradona, after the match on Saturday.
Nigeria lost 1-0 to La Albiceleste at the Coca-Cola Park Stadium in Johannesburg and the Swede walked off-the-field without offering Maradona a handshake, a custom in soccer games, drawing conclusions from the media that he had been too upset with the loss or his players for the number of chances they missed in the second half.
"You can do that (shake hands) whenever you like. It doesn't have to be straight after the match. No, there was no reason why I didn't shake his hand," said Lagerback. "I have a lot of respect for him and it is not a problem for me shaking his hand," he said.
Turning his focus to the defeat, Lagerback said he was gutted, for the Super Eagles deserved a draw. "Of course I'm very disappointed… but I was really impressed with my players, because they did very well against some of the best players in the world. We deserved a draw," he said.
Despite hailing his players' efforts, Lagerback admitted he felt they could have done better in dealing with Juan Veron's corner that picked Gabriel Heinze unmarked in the box to score Argentina's only goal with a diving header in the sixth minute.
"I have given my players a lot of credit for doing so well in dead-ball situations during the friendlies but the way games are played at this level is that if you lose concentration and don't mark players in the box you are going to be punished… we were punished this time, otherwise I think we could have earned a draw, but we are not out of it yet," said Lagersback, whose side face Greece on June 17 in Bloemfontein in their next match.
Lagerback also defended the choice to start with Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi on Nigeria's left side of attack in place of a well-established Peter Odemwingie.
"We thought Obasi was the best player to play and that was the reason. I thought he did a very good first half but he got tired in the second half but he lived up to the expectation I had on him," he concluded.

Eagles hail world class Enyeama
After a man of the match performance against Argentina, Super Eagles players were understandably queuing up to pay tribute to their 'world class' goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.
The Hapoel Tel Aviv goalkeeper was in superb form to deny Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain on multiple occasions, and deservedly picked up the Man of the Match award.
Skipper Joseph Yobo held nothing back in his praise.
"He is brilliant, fantastic. He has always been brilliant. Having him behind me always gives me confidence that in that split second when the ball gets past, he is always going to be there and today he showed that the is world class.
"Messi had chances and we knew it was going to be difficult when he picks the ball and starts running because he plays in a position where the centrebacks cant really go and touch him.
"But we had our goalkeeper right on the ball today and he made some great saves."
Yakubu Aiyegbeni was equally effusive in his praise.
"Enyeama made some great saves today, although we were unlucky not to win. I think a lot of credit should go to him and he did us proud today."
Obafemi Martins added his voice, "We have some really talented players and Enyeama showed it today that he is one of the best in the world."

Argentina down valiant Eagles
Gabriel Heinze powered in a header after six minutes to give Argentina a 1-0 victory over a spirited Nigeria side in a Group B match at Ellis Park
The Olympic Marseille defender was allowed to arrive unmarked into the box and drive in a powerful diving header that sailed into the top corner of the net, as the Nigerians made a slow start to the game.
Insult was added to injury when Taye Taiwo was forced to go off injured after a thunderbolt that just skimmed past Romero's post.
Nigeria made a slopw start to the encounter, but after going a goal down, the Super Eagles, playing in front of President Goodluck Jonathan, showed fight and spirit as they battled their way back into the game and caused plenty of anxious moments for Diego Maradona's Argtentina.
Chinedu Obasi, a surprise inclusion ahead of Osaze Odemwingie, was causing problems down the leoft side for Gutierrez, and he had two early opportunities to find the nest, but shot wide.
Obafemi Martins and Yakubu Aiyegbeni also had half chances, and Uche Kalu missed a glorious chance to draw the game level towrads the end.
But Nigeria were saved on numerous occasions by goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, who denied Messi, Tevez and Higuain, with spectacular saves.
The Israel-based goalie was deservedly named Man Of The Match, and to win such an honour in a losing side against the likes of Messi, tells its own story

Maradona - Tevez will start against Nigeria
Argentina coach Diego Maradona has confirmed that Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez will be in the first XI for his country’s opening World Cup clash against Nigeria on Saturday.
Argentina are blessed with a wealth of attacking talent, including Barcelona's Lionel Messi, Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain and Champions League-winning Inter Milan forward Diego Milito.
But Maradona has revealed he will start with Tevez who is likely to get the nod ahead of at least one of those three big hitters.
"Carlitos cannot be left out of the team. He is an idol of the people, more than me and Lionel Messi, so I read," Maradona told TyC Sports.
The former Napoli legend, who is aiming to become only the second man to win the World Cup as both a player and a coach, also brushed off any lingering doubts over the fitness of key player Messi.
He added: “Everything is good with Messi. There are no problems."

Three defenders for Maradona
Argentina coach Diego Maradona is set to take a risk by playing a three-man backline with Jonas Gutierrez at the heart in Saturday's World Cup opener against Nigeria in Johannesburg.
Maradona was keeping his exact plans for the match at Ellis Park under lock and key on Wednesday at the team's Pretoria headquarters, but the signs were that certain elements were already in place.
"Jonas has been around the block and he is used to going out wide and we know we are three out-and-out defenders so that means the coach will be looking for a lot of marking," said Marseille centre-half Gabriel Heinze.
Heinze's comment was as near as either he or teammate Mario Bolatti of Fiorentina got to giving details of the Argentina game plan as they seek to dominate Group B with matches against South Korea and Greece to come.
But the rumours flying around the camp are Maradona will play a 3-4-3 formation.
Heinze will be backed up by Walter Samuel of Inter Milan and Martin Demichelis of Bayern Munich may be shunted out further right than usual with Newcastle's Gutierrez overseeing part of his normal zonal duties.
But Heinze also said that "Argentina will always go after the game" and not sit tight and be ultra-cautious.
The attack will likely comprise Carlos Tevez as a third forward complementing Gonzalo Higuan and Lionel Messi, of whom so much is expected at this tournament.
Samuel says the team is ready to hit the ground running, despite poor qualifying form.
"I have confidence in this team's chances at this World Cup," insisted the defender.
The Nigerians have not shown the greatest of form coming in - they beat fellow World Cup qualifiers North Korea 3-1 at the weekend in an encounter overshadowed by a crowd stampede but previous encounters saw a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia and a 1-1 stalemate with Colombia.
Nevertheless Heinze says the Argentines should beware as "they are a strong and direct outfit" under experienced Swedish coach Lars Lagerback.
"They are very athletic and physically strong - and they have some quick players."

No fear factor for Eagles
Confidence is sky-high in the Super Eagles squad as they get set to kick off their fourth World Cup campaign, according to assistant coach Roland Andersson.
"The atmosphere among the players and the coaches is very good. The players are doing really well and they are not afraid of anyone. They have a lot of self-confidence and that is very good."
It is a view echoed by forward Chinedu Obasi, who says the Nigerians are in South Africa to win.
"We have come very far in our preparations. We are not here to play, we are here to win."
Nigeria open their campaign against Argentina on Saturday at Ellis Park stadium, and Andersson says the players are chomping at the bit to get out on the pitch and do the business.
"At this time, everyone of us just wants to get started now and play the match. That's how it works. We know it is going to be a tough game. But hopefully we will play a very good match against them."

Kanu expects close encounter
Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu expects a close encounter against Argentina on Saturday when the Super Eagles open their fourth World Cup appearance.
If he plays, it will be Kanu's fourth encounter with the South Americans, and after two victories and one defeat, the 33-year-old is confident the Super Eagles can come out triumphant.
“Argentina have the big–name players and everyone respects them. We also acknowledge that they are good and great players. But Argentina also have the same respect for us because they know the quality of our team and know that there is plenty that we can come up with at anytime.
“Yes, it will be tough but I believe we can overcome on the day. It is the World Cup and things do happen.”
Kanu was a member of the Nigeria Under-17 team that beat Argentina on the way to lifting the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Japan in 1993, and then captained the Under-23 team to beat Argentina to Olympic football gold in Atlanta three years later.
But back in Japan, in 2002, Kanu and Eagles fell 0-1 to Argentina in Ibaraki in their first match at the World Cup.
“You know, it is always very close anytime we play them at the top level. It is either 2-1 or 1-0. I expect that on Saturday, it would also be close, but victory will be Nigeria’s,” he said.

We are up to the task - Kanu
NIGERIA captain Nwankwo Kanu said on Wednesday that the Super Eagles have the ability to upstage the apple cart at this year’s FIFA World Cup finals.
Football’s biggest extravaganza comes round on Friday with an elaborate opening ceremony planned for the Soccer City, Africa’s biggest football stadium with a seating capacity of nearly 95,000. Kanu said the cynics are in for a huge shock.

The 33 –year old Nigeria leader has played three times previously against Argentina in global tournaments, winning on two occasions. He was a member of the Nigeria U-17 team that dismantled Argentina on the way to lifting the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Japan in 1993, and then captained the U-23 to beat Argentina to Olympic football gold in Atlanta three years later.

On his own personal target for the World Cup, in which he will participating for the third time, Kanu stated: “You know, African countries have always found it difficult at this top level. The best we’ve been able to achieve was quarter final by Cameroon in 1990 and by Senegal in 2002.
“If an African country, that is, Nigeria gets to the semi finals or Final this year, I will be fulfilled”.
At an informal meeting with the Honourable Minister/Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Honourable Ibrahim Isah Bio on Wednesday, Kanu praised the efforts of the Nigeria Football Federation for the preparation and welfare of the team, saying: “I know what I am saying. I have been in the national team for a long time and I know what used to obtain in our camp. The present NFF deserves commendation”.
He also lauded Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback for returning discipline and commitment to the team, while Lagerback also praised the players for their co-operation and dedication to the assignment at hand.

Eagles’ defence is weak - Mark Fish
FORMER Bafana Bafana star, Mark Fish has warned the Super Eagles to work more on its defence at the World Cup.
Speaking on brilafm, Fish said the Eagles' defence is not well organised thus could easily succumb to pressure.
"I think Nigeria team is full of experienced and quality players including young stars, and with this, they can beat any team in the tournament, but their defence is very weak. They (defenders) can be temperamental and give away goals easily.
"During the World Cup qualifying series, the Su-per Eagles gave away many goals in their matches even though they scored many goals as well.
At the World Cup, they can not do that because they will be playing against best in the world.
Therefore, the back four need to be stronger in order not to concede too many goals," said Fish who won the 1996 Nations Cup with South Africa.

At the World Cup, they can not do that because they will be playing against best in the world.
Therefore, the back four need to be stronger in order not to concede too many goals," said Fish who won the 1996 Nations Cup with South Africa.
Eagles’ Argentina bonus ready
THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has charged the Super Eagles to go all out against Argentina on Saturday, adding that their winning bonus is already on ground in Richard’s Bay.
NFF’s Assistant General Secretary (Finance and Admin), Alhaji Musbau Kayode, was in the delegation that arrived Richard’s Bay from Nigeria on Wednesday morning and NFF President, Sani Lulu Abdullahi said: “Now, we can even show the boys their winning bonus before they go to battle.
“We know it is not about the money, as every player wants to play in the World Cup and give his best, especially against the very big teams (such as Argentina), and of course, our players have made it clear they are not after the money at this tournament. But the money could also serve as added incentive as they for the three points.
“Everyone here is talking about the three wants. And we know that God can do it for us,” said Lulu.

Lukman to get Argentina start?
Roland Andersson has said that young midfielder Haruna Lukman is likely to start against Argentina when the Super Eagles open their World Cup campaign.
The Monaco midfielder has played in all three friendly games under Lars Lagerback and Andersson, who is Lagerback's right hand man, says he has made a strong case for a starting position.
"Yes, of course he can start, but we will see what happens. He has showed already that he is a good player. He is young and he develops more and more every day."
Lukman's vision and eye for the pass has led to comparisons with Nigeria great Austin Okocha. Andersson agrees, but says the Under-17 World Cup winner still has years ahead of him to reach that level.
"You can’t compare him to Okocha already now, but in the future he has the opportunity to become as good as Okocha was. But only if he works hard. He has to work on his defense and make sure he improves."
The youngster's position has been strengthened by the withdrawal of John Mikel Obi from the Super Eagles squad due to injury, but Lukman insists that he is his own man.
"I don’t see myself as a replacement for Mikel. We have the same style of playing, but Mikel is injured and has gone home.
"I am looking forward to the game against Argentina. It is football and everything can happen. I think we can play a very good game."

Eagles move Etuhu to tears
Midfielder Dickson Etuhu was moved to tears on Tuesday when the whole squad surprised him with a birthday cake and football card signed by all of the squad, including officials and even the Nigerian Sports Minister.
Luckily for the Fulham star, he escaped a more diabolic surprise, as earlier plans to dunk him in the pool were shelved due to a charity visit the team had to perform later in the afternoon to a children's home.
However, he was forced to make a speech in Pidgin English, a task which he found slightly more difficult than charging down intimidating opponents in the centre of midfield.
But he passed the test, barely, with one short statement "I wan thank all of una for this brithday cake."
Not exactly flowing pidgin, but it did the business, and as it was his birthday, the lads let it slide.

Yobo: Echiejile error teams responsibility
Joseph Yobo says the whole team must take collective responsibility for the error which led to the North Korean goal in Sunday's 3-1 at the Makhulong Stadium.
Left back Elderson Echiejile, a second half substitute, gifted the Koreans a pass right across the goal, with his centreback caught square, but Yobo says no blame will be passed, "These things happen in football and we all take responsibility as a team.
"Hopefully, it will not happen again. That is why we play friendlies so we can learn from our mistakes," he said.
Yobo admitted that the game was a good test.
"They play a similar way to South Korea so it was a good experience."

Nigeria 3-1 North Korea: Super Eagles' Win Marred By Fan Stampede
With both teams now in South Africa, a friendly was organised at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. Nigeria is a popular team in Africa with a few World Cup appearances under their belt, while the North Koreans are participating in their second tournament.
Ahead of the match thousands of fans stampeded the gates outside the stadium, leaving several people injured. Several fans fell as others wearing Nigeria shirts ran on in an attempt to get inside the 10,000-seater stadium, which will play no part in staging the actual tournament.
The match commissioner stopped the game minutes into the second half after receiving a belated report, but finally allowed play to continue after four minutes. The Tembisa Stadium is nothing like those built or renovated for the World Cup. It has concrete terraces and is surrounded by a fence with gates and no turnstiles.
The game began at a slow pace, with Nigeria keen to study their Asian counterparts before they put pressure on them. North Korea struggled to penetrate the box, with most of their shots at goal coming from long distance and doing little to trouble the Africans.
The Nigerians were the first to get on the score sheet, with Everton striker Yakubu making it 1-0 to the African side. The score would remain that way until the hour mark, when Obinna made it 2-0 from the penalty spot.
Jong Tae Sae scored the goal for the Koreans with a strike from outside the box to make it 2-1 and gave some hope to the Asian representatives. That hope was dampened with the sending off of Jong Cha in the 82nd minute because of handling the ball.
With time running out, the Koreans tried to get back on level terms, but Nigeria dominated the play and kept the ball in their attacking half for long periods of play, putting pressure on their fellow World Cup opponents.
With the 90 minutes almost up, Nigeria sprinted towards goal, but the North Korean goalkeeper did well to stop the original threat. However, Nigeria's constant pressure paid off with a third goal after good work down the right led to a header from Obafemi Martins to cap off a positive match for the Super Eagles. The match finished 3-1 in favour of Nigeria.

Ideye arrives, Mikel off
Brown Ideye arrived in South Africa on Sunday morning to join up with the Super Eagles just as the injured John Mikel Obi flew off to London to continue treatment on his injured knee.
Ideye was taken straight to Tembisa, where the team will play a friendly match later on Sunday against North Korea.
He met up with Media Officer Idah Peterside and NFF President Sani Lulu.
The rest of the squad are on their way to Durban, and the Sochaux forward is not expected to play any part in the friendly game.
Mikel, the man he replaced left the Nigeria camp for London where he will be attended to by Chelsea's medical staff.

Mikel out of World Cup - update
Sochaux midfielder Brown Ideye has been called up to replace John Mikel Obi, who has been ruled out of the World Cup with an ankle problem
Sochaux midfielder Brown Ideye has been called up to replace John Mikel Obi, who has been ruled out of the World Cup after failing to recover on time from knee surgery.
Super Eagles Media Officer Idah Peterside had earlier said that Mikel had suffered a fresh ankle injury, but the playert himself told KickOffNigeria.com that it was down to his knee.
"It is the same knee and I did not want to risk any further damage, also I think it is in the best interest of the team for me to withdraw rather than waste a slot," Mikel said. "I wish the team goodluck and I know that they will surprise people."
The midfielder had been in contact with the Chelsea medical staff over the past couple of days and the Chelsea doctor had been scheduled to fly out to South Africa on Monday to keep an eye on him.
Peterside told KickOffNigeria.com that coach Lars Lagerback has called up Sochaux forward Brown Ideye as replacement
"The coach has now decided to call up Brown Ideye to replace him."
Mikel had knee surgery last month to repair a torn meniscus and was expected to be out for two weeks.
He was left out of Nigeria's friendly match against Colombia by coach Lars Lagerback, who explained that the move was only precautionary and trained with the rest of the squad on Friday.
But a bruising developed after the session and after speaking with his advisers, club medical staff and Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu, Mikel told Lagerback he wanted to withdraw.

Nigeria's John Obi Mikel Out Of World Cup 2010 With Knee Injury... Chelsea star not prepared to risk 'long term' career
By James Daly
Jun 5, 2010 10:12:00 AM
John Obi Mikel has ruled himself out of the World Cup amidst fears over his long-term recovery from knee surgery.
In what is starting to be seen as a World Cup hoodoo for Chelsea players he joins Germany and Ghana internationals Michael Ballack and Michael Essien on the sidelines for this tournament.
Didier Drogba’s participation in the tournament is also in doubt after he fractured his arm in a 2-0 victory for the Ivory Coast in a warm-up match over Japan.
Teammate Kolo Toure initially said the striker told him his World Cup was over, although a team official later played down the comments.
Such is Chelsea’s strength in depth that the Blues were able to clinch the Premier League and FA Cup double without the 23-year-old Mikel in the finishing stages of last season.
The player hoped that surgery on a knee injury would grant him a clean bill of health in time for the World Cup but despite being named in Nigeria’s 23-man squad it was announced this morning that he won’t play.
Team official Emmanuel Attah said this morning: "We have dropped Mikel from the World Cup squad after he told the team he did not want to put his career at risk as his knee injury has yet to fully heal after a recent surgery."
The only consolation for Nigeria is that – like England with the Rio Ferdinand injury situation – Mikel can still be replaced by one of the seven players dropped from Lars Lagerback's initial 30-man World Cup squad.

I'M LOYAL TO EAGLES - OBAFEMI
VfL Wolfsburg of Germany striker, Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins (Obagol) has come out with a heart-tearing declaration that he is committed to the Super Eagles, despite information to the contrary in the international media early Friday.
The former Inter Milan and Newcastle United striker said he is ready to give his all towards ensuring Nigeria gets a remarkable outing at the World Cup in South Africa , despite a gory picture about him painted by unnamed NFF official.
The official was quoted as saying Obagol’s alleged bad attitude in camp and laisser-faire approach to training could have cost him a place in the World Cup team but for the injury to Everton of England striker, Victor Anichebe (The Beast).
Same official also said Martins has not thrown his body into training and matches which has left coach Lagerback disappointed.
However, in reaction, a shocked Martins said his commitment to the Eagles and loyalty to Nigeria has never wavered in the green-and-white national colours.
"My issues, as always, are about performances on the pitch and not in the newspapers.
The coach was equally shocked as myself to hear all these things being said about me.
"It's sad that when we have important preparation towards a big tournament like the World Cup some people would go about talking negatives about the team or players.
"As long as the team is doing what we could or should do then I'm happy, and I think that's the same for most players," the fleet-footed striker stated.
To underline his determination to excel Martins insists he is fighting like other strikers in the team to break into the starting eleven.
"Like many of the players in this present squad, this is my first World Cup and we are all fighting to make a great impact collectively," explained Martins.
"No one is guaranteed a starting place, past performance counts for nothing and so therefore I want to make sure I give my all every time.
"Whoever is speculating or accusing me of lacking the heart certainly doesn't know me.
"This is the World Cup and no one brings their B-game and I am ready to fight like everyone else to make the country proud," Oba concluded.

Cash-strapped NFF await government grant
Cash flow problems have hit the Nigeria Football Federation as the N900 million approved by the Nigerian government for them to prosecute the World Cup is yet to be released.
As of Thursday, one day after they arrived in South Africa, the NFF had yet to pay for their accommodations at the Protea Hotel Waterfront lodgings in Durban.
In addition, they have been asked to expect an invoice of around $700 000 from Arik Air as cost of airlifting the Super Eagles from London to South Africa.
Officials are also hoping that the money comes in on time for them to settle bonus payments to the players and Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback, all of whom are on graduated payments for the World Cup.
Lagerback is due to get $150 000 if the Super Eagles reach the Round of 16. That amount will climb to $200 000 if they reach the quarterfinal, $300 000 for the semi-final or third place finish.
If the team reach the Final, the Swede gets $400 000 and winning the Cup nets him $500 000.
Apart from the graduated bonuses promised to the players, they are also due to share in 25% of the pot from FIFA to the NFF, and the NFF is keen to sort that out before the World Cup kicks off.

OFFICIAL: Liverpool Confirm Rafael Benitez To Leave Club By Mutual Consent
By Matt Monaghan
Jun 3, 2010 3:57:00 PM
Liverpool have officially announced this afternoon that manager Rafael Benitez is to leave the club by mutual consent.
The Anfield board moved to get rid of the Spaniard after a disappointing campaign saw them finish in seventh place and dumped out of the Champions League in the group phase. Although Benitez only signed a five-year contract last summer with a £16 million severance clause, the two parties are rumoured to have agreed a compensation fee of £3 million.
An official statement on the club's official website this afternoon announced the search for a successor had already begun, led by club legend Kenny Dalglish and managing director Christian Purslow:
It said: "Mr Benitez relinquishes his position as team manager after six years and the Board of Directors would like to place on record their grateful thanks for his services and wish him all the best in his future career.
"The Board has now asked Managing Director Christian Purslow, with the assistance of Club Ambassador Kenny Dalglish, to begin a formal search to identify and assess potential candidates for the managerial position.
"No timescale has been placed on the process and Liverpool FC will make no further statement until a new manager is appointed.
Benitez said: "It is very sad for me to announce that I will no longer be manager of Liverpool FC. I would like to thank all of the staff and players for their efforts.
"I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager.
"Thank you so much once more and always remember: You'll never walk alone."
Chairman Martin Broughton praised the ex-Valencia manager's work. He said: "Rafa will forever be part of Liverpool folklore after bringing home the Champions League following the epic final in Istanbul but after a disappointing season both parties felt a fresh start would be best for all concerned.''
Despite lifting the Champions League in his first season on Merseyside, repeated failure on the domestic front and frustration over his transfer budget have led to the exit. Star players Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano were also rumoured to be considering their future if Benitez stayed.
Benitez has, however, been linked with a quick return to the sport and is being considered to replace Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan.

AC MILAN, INTER BATTLE FOR TAIWO
Stunning news out of Italy has it on authority that AC Milan and Inter Milan are both in a battle to grab the signature of Taye Ismaila Taiwo (The Tornado).
In the biggest transfer news to hit a Nigerian player in recent time, TT has been tipped to step out of the woods at Marseille, where he has been in stiff competition with Argentine icon, Gabriel Heinze for a regular feature in the left-wing-back position, with talk spreading about a move to Italy .
The new angle to Taiwo’s dilemma at Marseille reveals that the Super Eagles star is set to finally put doubts over his future to rest, although he initially announced his intention to stick with OM, if gaffer of the side, Didier Deschamps wants him.
Taiwo has a contract with the Phocaeans until 2011, but is stalling on sealing a new deal and Marseille are ready to cash in on a possible transfer to one of the Milan sides.
The former Lobi Stars and Gabros International star is reportedly interesting of Europe's Milan, Inter, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester City, but the Rossoneri appear in pole position for a deal.
The report states further that Taye Taiwo is needed at Milan to rejuvenate the squad’s aging back-four of Jankulovski (33), Zambrotta (33) and Favalli (38).
It has also been stated that Milan want to hire a young, enterprising player like Taiwo, with experience and prime to motivate Albertazzi (19) and Fondrini (20) to progress.
However, the biggest hurdle for a deal at Milan for Taiwo comes from his Ligue 1 club, as Marseille want between €10-12 million for his transfer, and the star’s agent says a deal at is on standby.
''He is with Marseille for now. These are all speculations. I keep hearing that AC Milan and Inter Milan are interested but they've not contacted us.
“Anyway, we wait until end of the World Cup, then we start negotiations with Marseille. Everything remains open,'' Taiwo's agent stated.

Lagerback ready for anyone
Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback is looking forward to a 'good tournament' with his Super Eagles after arriving in South Africa on Wednesday.
The Swede, who took over from Shuaibu Amodu in April and has worked with his squad only since the middle of May, said on arrival in South Africa that he considers it a privilege to be involved.
“First of all, I feel very privileged to be here and to be part of this World Cup; the first World Cup in Africa. We are looking forward to what we hope will be a good tournament. The few weeks (since I took over) have been wonderful for me – the players’ attitudes have been great. We have had great preparations,” said Lagerback.
“We have a very tough group, the quality of the opposition is very good and what I know is that all the teams want to win. But the Super Eagles are ready to take on the worlds best. We know there are high expectations, especially from our fans. If we give our 100%, we can beat any team. But I am happy with everything so far,” continued Lagerback.
Nigeria will open their campaign in Johannesburg against Argentina on 12 June before playing Greece in Mangaung/ Bloemfontein on June 17.
They will then finish off their Group Matches against Korea Republic in Durban on June 22.

Super Eagles arrive in South Africa
Nigeria overcame flight hitches became the first African country, outside of the hosts, to hit South Africa for the World Cup.
The Super Eagles landed at Durban's new King Shaka International Airport at 1100 hours local time and proceeded to make the 90-minute drive to their Protea Hotel Waterfront lodgings at Richards Bay, 160 kilometres north of Durban.
Originally scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, the team had their departure from London delayed by technical problems with their hired aircraft.
The Nigerian government was forced to intervene and sent in a local carrier to fly the team to South Africa.
Nigeria, who have been drawn n Group B with Argentina, South Korea and Greece, play their opening game of the tournament against Diego Maradona's team on June 12.
“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Nigeria to South Africa for the World Cup as the first of the African teams, besides Bafana Bafana, to arrive in the country. As giants of African football I am sure they will do the continent proud at the World Cup,” said Chief Executive Officer of the OC, Dr Danny Jordaan.

NFF apologise for aircraft debacle
NFF Secretary General Bolaji Ojo-Oba has issued an apology to the country after the Nigeria team failed to fly on Monday night as a result of technical issues with the aircraft chartered by the federation.
The contingent was scheduled to fly out of London on Monday night, but the flight was aborted when the pilot detected a malfunction, said to do with the aircraft's lighting system.
Ojo-Oba said the NFF were shocked and explained that officials did what was necessary to get a reputable charter firm to airlift the team to South Africa.
"After we came to a decision that the team would camp in London for pre –World Cup training, we immediately directed our consultant to hold talks with a reputable airline that could take the team to South Africa on charter agreement. We didn’t want the team to fly regular airline with its complications and unpredictability. Moreover, the players fly business class, and it would have been difficult for us to secure in excess of 40 Business Class seats on one aircraft.
“Our top officials had discussions with the charter company and were satisfied by their brief on the services they had previously provided for other national teams and contingents.
“We are therefore in shock that this company failed outright. We apologize to the Federal Government and the good people of Nigeria for this charter company’s failure, as well as the Nigeria High Commissioner to South Africa and the Mission Staff who went through considerable discomfort waiting for the team to arrive on Tuesday. Sometimes, these things happen in the aviation industry.
“Whatever we did was in the interest of the team, their safety, security and comfort. It is on record that the leadership of this NFF has done more for the welfare of the national teams than any before it. What has happened is unfortunate, but we are full of gratitude to the Federal Government for its keen interest in this matter,” said Ojo-Oba.

Why I Chose Mikel - Lagerback
After naming his 23-man list for the World Cup in South Africa, Super Eagles coach, Lars Lagerback has revealed his reason for keeping faith with Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi.
Lagerback submitted in an interview with brilafm.net that Mikel is almost ready following rehabilitation and could have even played against Colombia on Sunday but had to be rested so as to avoid any unnecessary setback.
“We could have played Mikel against Colombia but we had to watch him a little more. He has been training with the team and doing all the activities together.
“He is shaping up and we may see him against North Korea,” Lagerback hinted.

Eagles grounded by aircraft trouble
Nigeria's contingent failed to leave as scheduled for South Africa on Monday night after their chartered aircraft developed a technical fault just before takeoff.
The delegation, led by NFF President Sani Lulu Abdullahi Abdullahi was booked on a Luz Air chartered plane, but the pilot discovered a malfunction, just prior to takeoff.
"We were at the airport and all checked in when the pilot reported that he had noticed a red light on his controls," Media Officer Idah Peterside told KickOffNigeria.com.
"He said he was not sure what the exact problem was, and could not risk the lives of the squad and so he opted to ground the flight while the engineers tried to establish what the problem is."
The NFF were forced to make alternative hotel accommodation at the Radisson, close to the airport.
"The NFF are making alternative arrangements for us to fly on a different airline."
However, Idah explained that if Luz Air were to provide a different aircraft, the Nigeria contingent would fly.

Super Eagles 23 Man List
Ike Uche and Victor Anichebe are the two high profile casualties of Lars Lagerback's cull as he named his 23 players for the World Cup on Monday.
Joining the duo are Peter Utaka, Onyekachi Apam, Brown Ideye and the two domestic players Bassey Akpan and Terna Suswan.
The Swede announced the list to the players at a meeting where he called the affected players together and explained to them why they were being dropped.
"He called them together and explained that time was too short, and that injuries were also a factor," Super Eagles Media Officer Idah Peterside told KickOffNigeria.com.
More importantly, Peterside said Lagerback assured the players that in the unlikely event of injury to any player on the 23-man squad before kickoff, he would look no farther than that seven-man group.
The contingent leaves for South Africa later on Monday.
